Chapter 3 - Night

1. Paint a picture of the concentration camp using the images that have been described to you through the eyes of Elie. In other words, describe the concentration camp using specific examples.

  • Like a dead factory

  • Throwing babies into the flames

  • Stripped and uniformed - different sizes

  • Shaved heads

  • prisoners running around

  • food rationed -- soup bread

  • Families being separated

  • memories burned in minds

2. Dehumanization is the process of reducing the worth of a human by making one feel inferior or less than human. Explain what steps the Nazis went through to dehumanize the prisoners at the camp.

  • removed from household

  • tattooed numbers onto bodies

  • shaved bodies/removed clothing and given a shower

  • made prisoners run - overcome by fatigue/lose sanity = brainwashing

  • don't call people by their names

3. Stein of Antwerp is a pivotal point in this chapter. Who was this man? Why is this character and event a significant part of this chapter? (pages 43-45)

  • Family friend

  • wanted to know about his family

  • Elie lies and says family is OK

  • He finds out that his family didn't survive - Stein dies
